Why fee estimates are usually wrong
Most sellers work out fees against the item price. Almost every platform bills on the total the buyer pays, shipping included, so an $80 item with $20 shipping is charged the same as a $100 item with free shipping. That single misunderstanding is enough to turn a thin margin negative.
Fees stack, and the stack differs per platform
eBay charges one percentage plus a per-order fee. Etsy charges three separate fees before Offsite Ads. Amazon splits a price-based referral fee from a size-based fulfillment fee that ignores price entirely. Comparing platforms on headline percentage alone is misleading: the structure matters more than the number.
