Quick answer

Amazon FBA costs come in three parts: a referral fee (about 15% in most categories), an FBA fulfillment fee based on size and weight (around $3.22 for a small standard item), and monthly storage. On a $100 item that is about $18.48 in total, leaving $81.52 before your cost of goods. Since April 2026 a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge also applies to the fulfillment fee.

Fulfillment fees depend on size tier, not price

The referral fee scales with your selling price but the fulfillment fee does not. It is set by the product's size tier and shipping weight. This is why FBA economics are brutal on cheap, bulky items and comfortable on small, high-value ones. A $12 product and a $120 product in the same size tier pay the identical fulfillment fee.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Amazon FBA cost per item?

For a typical $100 item in a standard category, expect roughly $18-20 combining the 15% referral fee, a fulfillment fee near $3.22 for a small standard size, the 3.5% fuel surcharge on that fee, and a small monthly storage charge. Every item carries a $0.30 minimum referral fee.

What is the difference between the referral fee and the FBA fee?

The referral fee is Amazon's commission on the sale, charged as a percentage of the total price. The FBA fee is what you pay Amazon to pick, pack and ship the item, and it depends on size and weight rather than price.

Is Amazon FBA worth it for low-priced items?

Often not. Because the fulfillment fee is fixed by size rather than price, it consumes a much larger share of a $10 sale than a $50 one. Many sellers set a floor around $15-20 for FBA and fulfil cheaper items themselves.

Does the referral fee apply to shipping?

Yes, the referral fee is calculated on the total sale price including any shipping the buyer pays.
