Connects are the cost nobody calculates
Connects cost $0.15 each and are spent every time you bid, whether you win or not. If it takes twenty proposals at six Connects each to land one job, that is $18 of bidding cost attributable to a single contract. On a $300 project that quietly adds 6% on top of the service fee. The old 20/10/5 tiers are gone
Upwork used to charge 20% on the first $500 with a client, 10% up to $10,000, then 5% beyond. That sliding scale was replaced by the flat 10%, and then in May 2025 by the current per-contract 0-15% model. Advice written before 2025 that tells you to 'stick with a client to reach the 5% tier' no longer applies.
