You pay platform fees on shipping too

Published August 9, 2026

Quick answer

Every major platform charges its fee on the full amount the buyer pays, shipping included. Adding $10 of shipping to a $50 order costs an extra $1.36 on eBay, $0.95 on Etsy and $1.50 on Amazon. You are paying a commission on postage you are only passing through.

The fee base is the order total

A $50 item with no shipping costs $7.20 in eBay fees. The same item with $10 shipping costs $8.56. The extra $1.36 is 13.6% of the postage, charged as though the shipping charge were revenue. On Etsy the same change costs an extra $0.95, and on Amazon $1.50.

Free shipping is not more expensive, it is differently labelled

Because the fee applies to the total either way, a $60 item with free shipping and a $50 item with $10 shipping produce almost identical fees. Sellers who avoid free shipping to dodge fees on postage are not saving anything. Build the postage into the item price and you get the same fee outcome with better search placement on platforms that favour free shipping.

Where it genuinely hurts

Heavy, low-value items are the problem case. A $20 item with $15 shipping pays commission on $35 of which only $20 is yours to keep, and the postage was a real cost you already paid. This is the arithmetic behind the standard advice to avoid selling heavy cheap goods on commission-based marketplaces at all.

What to check on your own listings

Run a typical order through a calculator with your actual shipping charge in the shipping field rather than leaving it at zero. Sellers routinely underestimate their fee rate by two or three percentage points simply by forgetting that postage is part of the base.
