How to lower Upwork fees
Published August 3, 2026
Quick answer
Since May 2025 each contract carries its own 0-15% service fee, shown before you accept, so the old advice about sticking with a client to reach the 5% tier no longer applies. The lever that remains is bidding efficiency: Connects cost $0.15 each whether or not you win, and a poor win rate can quietly add several percent to your real cost.
The tiers are gone, so stop optimising for them
Upwork used to charge 20% on the first $500 with a client, then 10%, then 5% beyond $10,000. That structure was replaced by a flat 10% and then by the current per-contract 0-15% model. Any guide written before 2025 that tells you to consolidate work with one client to reach a lower tier is describing a system that no longer exists.
Connects are your real variable cost
At $0.15 each, spent on every proposal regardless of outcome, Connects are the cost nobody puts in their rate calculation. If it takes twenty proposals at six Connects each to win one job, that is $18 attributable to a single contract. On a $300 project that is another 6% on top of the service fee. Improving your win rate is worth more than any fee negotiation.
Check the fee before you accept, every time
Because the rate is set per contract and disclosed up front, it is now a number you can actually factor into whether a job is worth taking. Two otherwise identical contracts can carry different fees, and the only way to know is to look before accepting rather than after.
Frequently asked questions
Does Upwork still have the 20/10/5 fee tiers?
No. That structure was retired, replaced first by a flat 10% and then in May 2025 by a per-contract fee between 0% and 15%. Lifetime billings with a client no longer reduce your rate.
How much do Upwork Connects cost?
$0.15 each. They are spent when you submit a proposal whether or not you win, which makes them a real cost of doing business that the service fee does not include.
What is a typical Upwork service fee?
Most freelancers report landing near 10%, within a possible range of 0% to 15%. The exact figure is shown before you accept the contract.
