Is Amazon FBA worth it?

Published August 3, 2026

Quick answer

FBA is worth it on small, higher-value items and punishing on cheap bulky ones. The reason is structural: the referral fee scales with price, but the fulfillment fee is set by size and weight and does not. A $12 item and a $120 item in the same size tier pay the same fulfillment fee, so most sellers set a floor around $15-20 before FBA makes sense.

The fixed-cost problem

On a $100 item, a $3.22 fulfillment fee is about 3% and barely registers. On a $10 item the identical fee is 32% and, stacked on top of a 15% referral fee, leaves almost nothing. Nothing about the product changed; only the price it is spread across. This is the single most important thing to understand about FBA economics.

Costs that get left out of most estimates

Since April 2026 a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge applies on top of the fulfillment fee, and fulfillment fees themselves rose in January 2026. Add monthly storage, long-term storage surcharges past 365 days, the $39.99 Professional plan, and advertising, and the gap between a naive estimate and reality is usually several points of margin.

When to fulfil yourself instead

The referral fee is charged either way, so the real comparison is Amazon's fulfillment fee against your own pick, pack and postage cost. If you can ship cheaper than Amazon and you are not relying on Prime for conversion, merchant-fulfilled wins on cost. If Prime eligibility is what makes the listing convert, FBA usually earns back its premium.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum price for FBA to be worth it?

Most sellers use a floor somewhere around $15-20. Below that the fixed fulfillment fee consumes too large a share of the sale, because it is set by size and weight rather than price.

Is FBM cheaper than FBA?

On pure cost, often yes, if you can ship for less than Amazon's fulfillment fee. FBA's advantage is Prime eligibility and the conversion lift that comes with it, which does not show up in a fee comparison.

What is the Amazon fuel and logistics surcharge?

A 3.5% surcharge applied to FBA fulfillment fees, introduced in April 2026. It is charged on the fulfillment fee rather than the sale price.
